Constraint-Based Modeling: Representing Student Knowledge

چکیده

A Student Model is used in Intelligent Tutoring Systems to guide the pedagogical process. Student modeling is a difficult problem because of the limited bandwidth that a computer/student interaction normally allows. SQL-Tutor is an example of an ITS incorporating constraint-based modeling, a knowledge-poor approach that restricts the knowledge representation to the number of domain constraints that have been encountered and violated in the course of assessing a student’s answers. We discuss the student model incorporated in SQL-Tutor, and suggest how it might be extended to include high level knowledge. We evaluate the proposed refinements and discuss strengths and weaknesses of the revised model. Finally, we explore areas for further research.

Constraint-based knowledge representation for individualized instruction

Traditional knowledge representations were developed to encode complete, explicit and executable programs, a goal that makes them less than ideal for representing the incomplete and partial knowledge of a student. In this paper, we discuss state constraints, a type of knowledge unit originally invented to explain how people can detect and correct their own errors. Constraint-based student model...

Student Knowledge Diagnosis Using Item Response Theory and Constraint-Based Modeling

One of the most popular student modeling techniques currently available is Constraint Based Modeling (CBM), which is based on Ohlsson's theory of learning from performance errors. It focuses on the domain principles to correct faulty knowledge and assumes that a student will reach a correct solution without violating these fundamental domain concepts. However, even though this is a powerful and...

Authoring Constraint-Based Tutoring Systems

This tutorial covers both the theory and practice of Constraint-Based Modeling (CBM). The first part of the tutorial introduces constraints and CBM as a theoretical foundation for Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs). The second part covers ASPIRE, our new authoring system for developing constraint-based ITSs, and gives participants the opportunity to experience developing a small ITS in ASPIRE....

Measuring Knowledge Transfer Skills by Using Constrained-Student Modeler Autonomous Agent

In this paper we propose a methodology for the design of student modeler autonomous agent based on constraint model. The function of our autononious agent is to interpret the student’s constraint violations arid draw a behavioral schema of the student’s knowledge transfer skills on neural networks concepts. We aimed to build a student modeler by taking advantage of both the theoretical framewor...

Induction of Higher-Order Knowledge in Constraint-Based Models

SQL-Tutor is an ITS incorporating constraint-based modeling, an approach which uses a flat set of modular rules to represent the domain. The student model is based on the number of domain constraints that have been satisfied or violated in the course of assessing a student’s answers. We discuss the student model incorporated in SQL-Tutor, and suggest how it might be extended to include highleve...
